If I was to open this post, I’d honestly assume that I was about to read some fluff on how this new year is all about a new me and that it would use motivational quotes to get my hopes up. I normally write what I feel, this isn’t about getting more people to read the article, it’s about helping one person improve their outlook on certain things.

During 2019 or even the previous 1 to 8 years before it, you’ve probably had a roller coaster of a time. So many experiences, so many ups and downs. New friends or some friends you never thought would leave are no longer by your side. Made leaps with your career or your passion project, or both, or maybe they’re the same thing. Had your heart broken, attempted to develop yourself, renewed yourself multiple times and are a much wiser person because of it all. You’re smarter, stronger and more accurate in your decisions. You’ve grown essentially.

So what should we be doing for 2020? A new year. Well, I’m personally setting goals of some of the things I want to achieve and honestly I’m trying to convince myself to make a manifesto in video form to try and keep myself accountable. I mean, if I make it public that I have a goal or two, that’s a lot more pressure to keep up with it don’t you think. Maybe it’s something you can try? Write a post or make a short video explaining what you want to achieve in 2020 and share it. Now that’s courage if you ask me. And self-accountability.

New Years resolutions are a good thing, even if you’re worried you’re going to fail, give it a go. If you’re reading this later on in the year or even in the year 2027, having new resolutions or goals throughout the year are completely fine, even recommended! Physical goals, relationship goals, career goals, and other personal milestones are all amazing. Life isn’t about the end result anyway, it’s the journey of being a tiny bit better tomorrow, every tomorrow.

It’s very exciting, having goals and all, but what about the hardships or struggles that we may end up facing in 2020? We don’t often think about these unless we currently have a major one and it lingers over into the new year. The same way you had struggles in 2019, you may also have some hardship come your way in 2020 and they may even be harder. Not to sound like a negative Nancy, but this is the reality of life, it has highs and lows and every single one of them is of benefit to us.

Why don’t we prepare ourselves for struggles that may come our way? But how? Well firstly by being aware that hardship may come our way at any moment. Just by knowing this, if something does come up it won’t blindside you and unexpectedly slap you. Nobody likes to be slapped. Secondly, build yourself up. If we develop our character, nurture ourselves and become stronger overall beings, then we’re going to have more tools, God willing, to take on the hardships that are awaiting us. Yes, each hardship is an opportunity for growth, but why shouldn’t we be stronger in the first place to tackle them.

Lastly, being grateful for all the good that you have in your life is much more effective, and necessary, than you may think. Count the blessings that you have and you’ll constantly be reminded to be grateful. This is easier said than done, but trying to live every day, 365 days, by being grateful will change you as a person. This also acts as a flag to remember how much we are in need of assistance from God as we notice that these blessings, as amazing as they are, may not always be there. Being strong, resilient and patient may be the answer to your hardships, but in times of abundance, joy, and blessings, the key is to be grateful. Alhamdulillah.

“Amazing is the affair of the believer, verily all of his affairs are good and this is not for no one except the believer. If something of good befalls him he is grateful and that is good for him. If something of harm befalls him he is patient and that is good for him” (Muslim)
